Acrylic, Lexan, Plexiglass, Polycarbonate and Plastic

Do You Know The Difference?

Most of you will answer “No”, some of you may answer “Yes”, or think they are different names for the same product.

You will be surprised to know that they are actually, different.

Let’s Break It Down.

  • Lexan: Is a brand name of polycarbonate, which is a transparent plastic of high impact strength.
  • Polycarbonate: Synthetic resin in which the polymers units are linked through carbonate groups, including many molding materials and films.
  • Plexiglass: A brand name of acrylic and is sold under many different names, such as Acrylite, Lucite and Perspex.
  • Plastic: Is a generic term for a large group of semi-synthetic materials, consisting mainly of one or more polymer mixed with additives.

In this blog we will focus on acrylic.

Acrylic: A synthetic resin & textile fibers made from polymers of acrylic acid or acrylates.

The benefits of Acrylic are many:

  • Durable.
  • Impact Resistant.
  • Lighter and 4 – 8 times stronger than untampered glass of equal thickness.
  • Brilliance, Clarity and Transparency.
  • Hardness
  • Weatherability; Stands up to the elements longer than other plastics.
  • Easy to Clean; No Special Cleaners Needed. Just Soap and Water.
